Where the System Ends, CAA Begins. We Built the College We Couldn't Find. CAA Story #21: Legacy Student Robert R.
Robert was one of CAA's very first students back in 2009.

When Robert Tafoya first started taking classes at CAA, he was much quieter and more reserved than the confident apprentice everybody knows today. Robert’s mom was the person who first introduced Robert to the idea of CAA, and ever since it has been a place where Robert can keep learning, growing, connecting with others, and discovering new interests and skills
Robert started at CAA as a student, and later applied for a leadership role as an apprentice teacher in some classes. In the winter and spring quarters of 2026, he was working as an apprentice teacher in both the drum circle and cheer classes. Through these classes, he has found opportunities not only to build new skills, but also to come out of his comfort zone.
Robert has shared that he likes the classes where he is able to move his body, he really enjoyed his hip hop dance class. It does not matter if he’s participating in classes as a student, or helping support as an apprentice teacher, Robert brings his energy and positive attitude wherever he goes.
Before becoming a part of the CAA community, Robert worked as a server at a restaurant. That work did give him responsibility, but at CAA he discovered a different kind of purpose: building community and confidence through creativity and connection.
Over the years, CAA has helped him break out of his shell and become more comfortable expressing himself. Stepping into CAA apprenticeship roles has also allowed him to encourage others the same way he was once encouraged.
One of Robert’s favorite parts about CAA is the people he has met along the way. The friendships and support system he’s built have made a lasting impact on him, and it continues to push him to be the best he can.
From student to apprentice, Robert’s journey is a reminder of how powerful and important it can be when people are given the space to grow, move, and truly be themselves.
